Nebraska Child Support Payment Center Begins 25th Year

$8.8B disbursed since December 2001; nearly $989K daily

Nebraska State Treasurer Joey Spellerberg is celebrating the performance of the Nebraska Child Support Payment Center (NCSPC) as it begins its 25th year of operation. Nebraska is the only state in which the State Treasurer’s Office oversees the receipt and distribution of child support payments.

Key performance highlights include:

* Since December 2001, the NCSPC has processed approximately $8.8 billion in child support payments.

* Year-to-date, the center has disbursed $262.2 million through 1,160,555 payments.

* An average of $988,943 in child support payments is processed daily.

* In 2024, the NCSPC disbursed $274.2 million in child support payments, compared to $227.5 million in 2002, the first full year of operation.

*The NCSPC’s Customer Service Call Center handles an average of 3,300 calls a month.

* Twenty-four years ago, the NCSPC mailed more than 76,000 billing statements a month. Today, fewer than 2,000 statements are sent per month due to technological innovation, resulting in an annual cost savings of more than $45,000.

* Of the roughly 100,000 payments remitted monthly by employers, nearly 90% are sent electronically.

* In 2001, the NCSPC had a staff of more than 60 employees. Today, it has 11 employees due to the implementation of new technology.

As a division of the Treasurer’s Office, the NCSPC acts as the clearinghouse for all child support payments in the state, based on an interagency agreement between the State Treasurer’s Office and the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), and as authorized by state statute. Enforcement of child support orders is managed by DHHS.

The Center began operations Dec. 21, 2001, in compliance with a 1996 federal law that required states to create disbursement units for child support. The first payment was disbursed Dec. 26, 2001. The highest daily volume recorded in the past 24 years was $5.6 million on May 6, 2020.

“Thanks to the hard work of our staff, Nebraska has proven itself to be a leader in this important function of state government,” Treasurer Spellerberg said. “Tens of thousands of children who count on these financial resources have been the beneficiaries of our state’s innovation and efficiency.”

For nearly a quarter century, the Child Support Payment Center has worked to make payments faster, safer, and easier for families. We’re grateful to our staff, partners, and families for their trust along the way. This milestone is about supporting children and building stronger futures,” said NCSPC Program Director Marcia Scheinost.
