Treasurer Stenberg Warns of Misleading Postcards Concerning Unclaimed Property

Postcards stamped on the fronts and backs with the words, Unclaimed Property Notification, are not being sent by the Nebraska State Treasurer’s Unclaimed Property Division, State Treasurer Don Stenberg said today.

The postcards instruct receivers to call a toll-free number and enter personal identification information. The recorded message at the toll-free number instructs receivers to search for unclaimed property at www.unclaimed.org.

“These cards are not being sent by the Nebraska State Treasurer’s Office, and the website mentioned when receivers call the toll-free number is not the State Treasurer’s website,” Stenberg said. “I recommend that Nebraskans who have received these postcards not call the number on the card or respond to the card in any way.

“We continue to encourage Nebraskans to check for unclaimed property at our website at www.treasurer.org or by calling our office at 402-471-8497 or 877-572-9688 toll free,” Stenberg said.

Stenberg said Nebraska’s Unclaimed Property Division has received complaints and inquiries about the postcards. The National Association of Unclaimed Property Administrators (NAUPA) and unclaimed property administrators in other states also have reported receiving consumer complaints over the past several weeks regarding the postcards, which are postmarked from Denver, Colo.

A NAUPA spokesman said the cards appear to have been sent by a debt collector. They have shown up in a variety of solid colors – green, blue, yellow, and orange.

“I want to assure Nebraskans that these misleading postcards are in no way related to the work of the Unclaimed Property Division of the Nebraska State Treasurer’s Office. My staff works diligently to promote our unclaimed property program through clear, consistent messages that Nebraskans can trust. I encourage all Nebraskans to contact my office if you have any question about any unclaimed property correspondence or phone call that you have received. The integrity of our program is of great importance to us,” Stenberg said.
