Visitors to NEBRASKAland DAYS in North Platte will be able to search the State Treasurer’s Office records for possible unclaimed property in their names or in the names of their businesses, relatives, or friends. More than $1.4 million of unclaimed property is being held for residents of Lincoln County and the surrounding area.

Visitors should look for the Treasurer’s new red, white, and gold banner to start their search. State Treasurer Don Stenberg’s office is a silver sponsor of NEBRASKAland DAYS, June 11-25 in North Platte.

“One of my priorities as State Treasurer is to return as much unclaimed property as possible to its rightful owners. We are continuing to work to achieve that goal,” Stenberg said.

Specialists in the Unclaimed Property Division of the Treasurer’s Office will be available all three weekends of NEBRASKAland DAYS to help visitors locate any property that is being held in their names. Unclaimed property could be in the form of matured CDs, lost IRAs, deposits, dormant accounts, rebates, refunds, stock and mutual funds, utility deposits, and abandoned safe deposit boxes.

Unclaimed Property specialists will be available at the festivities June 11, 12, 16-18, and 23-25. To find the Unclaimed Property table, visitors are asked check with the NEBRASKAland DAYS office at 509 E. Fourth St., Suite G.

Last year the Unclaimed Property Division of the State Treasurer’s Office paid out more than $10.3 million in claims. So far this year, more than $3.4 million has been distributed to rightful owners. In all, the Unclaimed Property Division is holding more than $100 million worth of property.

Finding unclaimed property couldn’t be easier, according to Meaghan Aguirre, director of the Unclaimed Property Division. A searchable database is maintained at the Nebraska State Treasurer’s Office website at www.treasurer.org. Aguirre advises website users to check for their own last names and variations of their first names and middle initials as well as the names of relatives, friends, business associates, and deceased family members. Since the database is updated regularly, she recommends visitors check the database more than once.

Claims under $300 in value may be submitted online at www.treasurer.org. Claims for property valued at more than $300 must be submitted by mail and must include a notarized claim form, photocopies of the claimant’s driver’s license and Social Security card, and a list of previous addresses.
