Putting their best feet forward are five Treasurer’s Office employees who took part in Walk This Way, a program to encourage state employees to participate in wellness activities. Walkers who met the 450,000-step goal were recognized March 30 and invited to join Gov. Dave Heineman in a group photo in the State Capitol Rotunda.

Treasurer’s Office employees, photographed here, were among those faithful walkers who exceeded the state’s goal. Troy Reiners, director of the Child Support Payment Center, walked 3 million steps. Others who exceeded the state goal are Staci Bolton, 1.8 million steps; Kelly Porath, 1.8 million steps; Betty Gilg, who stopped counting after 651,912 steps; and Matt Scheinost, who stopped counting after 665,453 steps.

Staci and Kelly are specialists in the Treasury Management Division. Betty is assistant director of Information Technology Division, and Matt is a business systems analyst in the Information Technology Division. Betty Gilg, by the way, not only walks, but runs, averaging 15 miles a week. Troy Reiners works out on the elliptical machine at the YMCA three to five days a week, averaging a fast jog of 5.5 miles each visit.

During the past year, Walk This Way participants were encouraged to increase their physical activity by logging at least 450,000 steps by March 31. Of those participating in the challenge, 3,884 people met or exceeded the 450,000 step goal, which is more than twice the number achieving the goal in 2010, according to a news release from the Governor’s Office.

“The Walk This Way program has been a successful part of our state wellness program that is benefiting state employees and their families,” Gov. Heineman said in the news release. “I congratulate everyone who met and went beyond the initial goal.”

The State of Nebraska’s innovative efforts to encourage wellness have been awarded the Gold Well Workplace Award presented by the Wellness Council of America. Nebraska is one of only two state governments to win the award.

Congratulations to these Treasurer’s Office employees for setting the standard and providing role models for their colleagues. Four more Treasurer’s Office employees who took part in Walk This Way will be featured soon.
